Not everything that’s exposed is meant to be seen…
When first year Uni student Jake arrives at the community centre for ‘some volunteering thing’, he’s looking for an easy win, to tick a box, and generate content for his channel. Instead, he’s met by Annie, who runs a tight ship, demands respect, and won’t hesitate to drag him up to her standards.
As Jake pushes the boundaries of expectation, he attracts the attention of Mary, a retired headteacher who refuses to accept the limitations of growing older. Seeing Jake as her latest project – a type she knows too well – she steps into the role of mentor and guide. In her determination to shape him, Mary fails to recognise the risks he is taking, not helped by the fact that she is quietly concealing a secret of her own.
Meanwhile, beyond the walls of the community centre, Annie is fighting a different battle. Her daughter Beth is being steadily drawn away by Annie’s estranged husband, tempted by promises of a better life. Annie is fiercely protective, but as tensions rise, the question remains: who has ever been there to protect Annie?
As these lives collide, the lines between care and control, connection and exploitation begin to blur. Private struggles surface, relationships fracture, and the roles each character clings to begin to unravel.
Exposed is an intimate, site-specific play exploring connection, loneliness, and the hidden pressures that shape us. It asks what happens when the masks we rely on begin to slip and what is revealed when our secret lives can no longer stay hidden.
